What goes wrong on ranges, wall ovens and cooktops.
Cooking appliances are the ones people put up with the longest. An oven that runs cold gets compensated for with a longer bake time; a burner that takes three tries to light becomes a habit. Both are small repairs that got postponed. Gas appliances in particular deserve prompt attention, because an igniter that is failing slowly is also a burner that is releasing unburnt gas each time it hesitates.
Symptom by Symptom
Cooking problems usually start small. These four are the ones we get called about most, and what each one means.
Bake element
The oven still gets warm, so nothing looks obviously broken. But the lower bake element has split — often you can see a blistered gap in the loop — and all the heat is now coming from the top. Everything cooks from one side only.
Visible damage means a straightforward part swap, usually same visit.
Door and hinges
Preheat drags on and the kitchen gets uncomfortably warm. The door is sitting crooked because a hinge has sagged, or the seal around it has gone brittle, and heat is pouring out along the gap. The oven keeps firing to hold a temperature it cannot hold.
Hinges and seals are inexpensive. The wasted gas or power is not.
Burner and igniter
The flame runs along only part of the burner tube, or takes a long time to catch. The igniter has weakened and no longer draws enough current to open the gas valve properly, or the ports in the tube are partly blocked. Both give you an oven that reads the right number and cooks nothing evenly.
We measure the igniter draw rather than guessing at parts.
Door lock
The self-clean cycle finished hours ago and the door still will not open. The lock motor has jammed part way, or the control board never got the signal that the cavity had cooled. Forcing the door at this point usually bends the latch and turns a small job into a bigger one.
Do not pull on it. The latch releases easily with the panel off.
