What Goes Wrong Inside a Microwave

A microwave usually fails in one of four ways, and they feel very different from the outside.

Sparking and a burnt smell during a cycle

Flashes inside the cavity and a smell of scorching. The small square cover on the side wall has absorbed splattered grease and started to char. Once it burns through, arcing goes straight onto the metal behind it, and the damage stops being cosmetic.

Stop using it until this one is looked at. The part itself is inexpensive.

A plate that will not turn

The plate sits still while the microwave runs, so food heats in bands — scalding at the edge, cold in the middle. Either the roller ring has broken up or the small drive motor underneath has seized. Nothing dangerous, but every reheat comes out uneven.

Both parts are cheap and reachable without stripping the unit.

A microwave that acts completely dead

The display works but nothing starts. Microwaves will not run until several interlock switches all confirm the door is properly shut — a safety design, not a fault. When one switch fails or the latch hooks wear, the oven reads the door as open and simply refuses.

Never bypass an interlock. We replace the switch set as a matched pair.

The extractor runs but the air stays thick. On an over-the-range unit the metal grease filters underneath clog solid, and the fan can no longer pull anything through. The motor then runs hot against a blocked path, which is how the fan itself eventually goes.

Filters are washable. If the fan is already noisy, tell us on the call.
